Definitive Safety Group LLC is a California-based environmental health and safety consulting firm specializing in compliance monitoring, regulatory alignment, and sustainability initiatives (REHS #8887).
We are seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Environmental Health & Safety Inspector intern to support safety monitoring and compliance documentation for a large-scale solar farm construction project in Fresno County, California.
This is an exceptional opportunity for students interested in gaining real-world field experience in construction site safety, environmental health inspections, renewable energy infrastructure, and greenhouse gas (GHG) compliance on an active renewable energy project.
You’ll work directly on an operational construction site, conducting safety inspections, documenting compliance with Cal/OSHA regulations, monitoring environmental controls, and ensuring contractor adherence to sustainable energy project requirements. This hands-on experience provides unparalleled exposure to the intersection of environmental health, construction safety, and clean energy development.
Core Responsibilities:
Construction Site Safety Inspections (Primary Focus)
• Conduct daily or weekly safety inspections of active solar farm construction sites
• Document compliance with Cal/OSHA construction safety standards
• Identify potential hazards including:
• Fall protection and scaffolding safety
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) compliance
• Electrical safety during installation
• Heavy equipment operation safety
• Heat illness prevention protocols
• Trenching and excavation safety
• Hazard communication and signage
• Prepare detailed field inspection reports with photographic documentation
• Track corrective actions and verify hazard mitigation
• Communicate findings to site supervisors, contractors, and DSG management
Environmental Health & Compliance Monitoring
• Monitor environmental controls and best management practices (BMPs) on construction site
• Verify stormwater pollution prevention plan (SWPPP) compliance
• Document dust control measures and air quality management
• Inspect waste management and hazardous materials handling procedures
• Assess noise monitoring and mitigation compliance
• Review erosion and sediment control measures
Greenhouse Gas (GHG) & Sustainable Energy Compliance
• Understand and document compliance with California’s renewable energy regulations
• Monitor adherence to GHG reduction requirements and sustainability benchmarks
• Assist in tracking renewable energy project milestones and deliverables
• Document sustainable construction practices and material sourcing
• Support reporting for environmental impact assessments
Regulatory Documentation & Reporting
• Prepare comprehensive daily, weekly, and monthly inspection reports
• Maintain organized documentation of all site inspections and findings
• Compile photographic evidence and annotated site maps
• Assist in preparation of regulatory compliance submittals
• Support incident investigation and root cause analysis if safety events occur
• Ensure documentation meets Cal/OSHA and client contractual requirements
Business Development & Proposal Identification
• Identify potential new inspection, monitoring, or compliance opportunities at project site or through industry contacts
• Network with contractors, project managers, and renewable energy stakeholders
• Document scope of potential new projects and communicate to DSG leadership
• Assist in preparation of proposals for identified opportunities
• Earn commission on awarded contracts per commission agreement
Professional Development
• Complete Cal/OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification (provided by DSG)
• Participate in field safety training and hazard recognition workshops
• Learn construction project management and contractor coordination
• Develop expertise in renewable energy project compliance requirements
What We’re Looking For:
Required Qualifications:
• Current undergraduate or graduate student (Environmental Health, Public Health, Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Construction Management, or related field)
• Strong understanding of Cal/OSHA regulations and construction safety principles
• Interest in environmental health & safety inspections and field work
• Excellent attention to detail and observational skills
• Ability to work independently in outdoor/construction environments
• Reliable transportation to access Fresno County job sites
• Physical ability to walk construction sites, climb ladders, and navigate uneven terrain
• Comfortable working in hot, outdoor conditions (summer temperatures in Central Valley)
Preferred Skills & Attributes:
• Knowledge of Cal/OSHA construction safety standards (Title 8 CCR)
• Familiarity with environmental health inspection protocols
• Understanding of greenhouse gas regulations and sustainable energy compliance frameworks
• Experience with construction sites, field inspections, or site safety monitoring
• Cal/OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Construction certification (or willingness to obtain)
• Proficiency with digital documentation, photography, and report writing
• Strong communication skills for interacting with contractors and site personnel
• Problem-solving ability and proactive hazard identification mindset
• Interest in renewable energy, solar power, or clean energy infrastructure
