Our intern will conduct a series of tasks with broad application to the work we do in the field and office. Daily tasks will include how to operate, repair, and maintain a wide range of field equipment, including pumps, logging instrumentation, winches, generators and vehicles. In addition, interns will be involved in computer work where data about the subsurface geology and hydrogeology will be processed and managed. Exposure to real world issues in fluid mechanics, geophysical, geological and/or hydrogeologic challenges will occur as the intern will be engaged with projects that may include characterization of aquifers and groundwater flow, acquisition of downhole logging data, evaluation of groundwater quality, and other parameters associated with the study of subsurface geology, geophysics and groundwater. The intern’s work will be regionally focused on projects in the San Diego County area though s/he may be asked to travel elsewhere should the need arise. This work will provide learning opportunities related to the aquifers in the regions as well as their role in water supply and the larger context of how groundwater supply/quality/demand is being impacted by a combination of population and climate change factors.
Duties will include, but are not limited to:
· Assist in maintenance/repair/check-out (calibrations, etc) of borehole testing field equipment, logging tools and other equipment such as pumps, meters, generators.
· Learn about how each geophysical measurement is acquired including such measurements as:
Analog video, Optical (digitized) video, Electric logs–resistivity, 16-64 inch normal resistivity, spontaneous potential, single point resistance, Natural gamma, Caliper
In addition to operation of tools to acquire these measurements, intern will also learn the fundamentals of interpretation of each log and how/why these tools are used in overall groundwater/aquifer characterization.
Other tools and measurements will be used depending on project activity during intern’s employment.
· Assist with data collection in the field, and processing/interpretation in the office.
Potential applicants must:
– Have a valid driver license.
– Pass a complete background check.
– Proficient in basic computer skills.
– Comfortable working with his/her hands and tools if necessary.
– Ability to lift 50lbs over his/her head.
– Take direction easily and can think on his/her feet to solve problems.
