The best interview results come from combining your AI insights and results with your own reflection, practice, and self-awareness.

Understanding the role
First, carefully review the job description. For example the responsibilities and required skills section usually contain information that could help you anticipate the kinds of questions you might be asked. By understanding the job responsibilities, you can better prepare to prompt ChatGPT with proper instructions.
Real-Time Mock Interviews
Step 1: Turn On Voice Mode First (Recommended)
For the most realistic interview practice, use Voice Mode from the start.
Voice Mode simulates a real interview by forcing you to think and respond out loud, just like you would with a live interviewer.
This means no transcripts, chat-logs, or other things you can refer to on your screen.
How to turn on Voice Mode:
- Open the ChatGPT mobile app or website
- Go to ChatGPT Settings
- Turn on the feature “Seperate Voice”
- Start a New Chat
- Tap the headphones or waveform icon.
* Allow microphone access if prompted.
Once enabled, ChatGPT will speak back to you using a separate voice.

Step 2: Set Up the Mock Interview
You can either set up your mock interview before or after turning on Voice Mode. Before turning on voice mode, type out your prompt and other relevant materials. If you start with Voice Mode on, say (don’t type) your prompt.
Example Prompt:
“Act as a hiring manager and conduct a mock interview for an entry level Data Analyst role. I have 3 years of experience. Ask one question at a time and wait for my response.”
When prompting ChatGPT or any other AI tool with interview questions, it’s important to mention your interview role, your experience level, AI question pacing and AI conversation flow.
Step 3: Answer Questions Verbally
- Respond as if you are in a real interview.
- Avoid pausing to “perfect” answers.
- Practice clear structure, confidence, and pacing.
If you get stuck, say:
- “Give me a moment to think.”
- “Can you repeat the question?”
This mirrors real interview dynamics.
Text-Based Practice Interviews
While Voice Mode is nice for realistic mock interviews, text-based practice can still be useful in certain situations. Text-based practice is helpful when you want to:
- Slow down and think through your answers
- Practice structuring responses (e.g., STAR method)
- Refine wording, clarity, and key examples
- Review and revise answers in detail
Post-Interview Reflection
At the end of the interview, ask ChatGPT for feedback out loud.
Examples:
- “Give me feedback on my answer about _________.”
- “How could I improve my responses?”
- “Were my answers clear and concise?”
To make practice more challenging and realistic, ask ChatGPT to purposely ask follow-up questions and push back on vague answers. After completing the voice interview, you may switch to typing. Be sure to:
- Review strengths and areas for improvement
- See rewritten or stronger sample answers
- Identify any skills or examples to practice further
Using ChatGPT Edu
Many students and educators have access to ChatGPT Edu, a version of ChatGPT designed specifically for educational institutions. ChatGPT Edu supports learning, skill-building, and career preparation while aligning with institutional guidelines for responsible AI use.
When using ChatGPT (including ChatGPT Edu) for mock interviews or job search preparation, do not share personal, sensitive, or confidential information. Keep prompts general and focused on skills, experiences, and scenarios. Ethical AI use means leveraging these tools to support your thinking and practice, not to replace your own work or give away your personal data. You can control how your data is used for ChatGPT training by navigating to Settings -> “Data Controls” and turning off “Improve the model for everyone”.

AI Tools in Job Search
When used thoughtfully, AI can be a powerful support system throughout your interview preparation and job search. For college students and recent graduates in particular, these tools can help bridge gaps and make the preparation process feel more accessible.
However, the best results still come from combining your AI insights and results with your own reflection, practice, and self-awareness. AI can help you organize your thinking and sharpen your communication, but it’s your actions that ultimately make you a strong candidate. By supplementing your interview preparation with tools such as ChatGPT, you can walk into your interviews more confident and prepared.
